HUNTERS are rejoicing with the magpie geese daily bag limit increased from three to seven.
On Tuesday the increase was announced after scientists from the Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security found an 89 per cent jump on last year’s population.
The estimated geese population is 1.86 million. A combination of wet season conditions, improved nesting and survivorship contributed to the increase.
Environment, Climate Change and Water Security Minister Lauren Moss said a balance between sustainability and hunting opportunities was crucial.
“The decision around the length of the waterfowl hunting season and the daily bag limit is based on scientific data that is carefully collected and analysed,” she said.
“We always seek to strike the right balance that will ensure the sustainability of the magpie goose population, but also the opportunity for hunters to participate in this valued recreational activity.”
The waterfowl hunting season begins from September 21 on designated hunting reserves.
