McDonald’s is launching a “unique” new menu item that combines two of our favourite things to celebrate a major Australian “milestone” – but do they belong together?
This year is the 30th anniversary of the McCafé, a homegrown idea that turned into a feature at Macca’s restaurants around the world.
To mark the big three-oh, the fast-food giant has decided to combine two McCafé favourites, and created the “Birthday Cake Latte”.
The “innovative” new beverage is only available for a limited time, and as the name suggests, features the signature smooth taste of an Aussie coffee combined with “delicious cake flavours”.
“It wouldn’t be a birthday without cake, so we are excited to launch the Birthday Cake flavoured Latte and give our customers a unique coffee flavour to try as part of our anniversary celebrations,” Lancy Huynh, group brand manager at McDonald’s Australia, told news.com.au.
“Plus, we know coffee and birthday cake go hand-in-hand, so why not mix it in the same drink?
“We look forward to hearing what our customers think of the new flavour.”
The announcement comes just days after Macca’s claimed one in four coffees sold in Australia is from one of its McCafés, totalling over 630,000 coffees every single day.
In-house baristas have been serving freshly brewed coffee under its golden arches since 1993, with the burger giant claiming the “McCafé changed McDonald’s approach to coffee across the world”.
“With over 1,000 locations in Australia, McCafé is now one of the largest coffee retailers in the country, representing an impressive one in every four coffees sold in Australia,” Ms Huynh said
“It’s a brand that was created by coffee lovers for coffee lovers, so we are extremely proud to celebrate this milestone with the experts that helped shape it – our customers right here in Australia.”
The Birthday Cake flavoured Latte will be sold for a limited time in both hot, and a cold frappé style, from May 24, in restaurants and via McDelivery.
McCafé is sending its coffee van going on tour along the eastern seaboard from May 24 to June 6, giving customers in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Townsville a free coffee between 6am and 2pm.
Full details will be shared across the McDonald’s Instagram this week.
It’s not the first time Macca’s has offered Aussies a unique cup of coffee, with the fast-food giant launching the “Australiano” in May 2022.
The brew combined the classic flavour of locally-roasted coffee beans with a combination of native wattleseed and chai.
