A popular British food blogger with over 1.8 million followers is facing backlash from fans after eating a massive crab that can live for up to 30 years.
Tod Inskip, who posts on social media as Eating With Tod, recently devoured an eight-kilogram crab while visiting the Sydney Fish Market during a trip to Australia.
In a video shared on his TikTok, Mr Inskip filmed himself selecting the live, 15-year-old Tasmanian Giant Crab from a tank.
The content creator then held up the huge creature, which had a hefty price tag of $2000, before recording its deep-frying process.
What is the Tasmanian Giant Crab?
The Tasmanian Giant Crab is recognised as one of the largest crabs in the world, weighing up to 17.6kg.
It is considered a rare delicacy among seafood lovers due to its high commercial value.
However, these crabs are vulnerable to overfishing because they grow slowly and take a long time to mature.
This predicament has raised concerns among conservationists who aim to promote sustainable fishing practices for this endangered species.
The viral video
“We’re in Sydney trying an 8.5kg Tasmanian King Crab,” his glowing review began.
“The price tag is $2000. Tasmanian Kings can live up to 30 years. Holding this thing was like holding a bodybuilder of the sea.”
He mentioned that when he was selecting and then holding up the crab, he drew the attention of passers-by “like I was on the red carpet”.
He then explained the cooking process, saying, “They start by deep frying the King Crab, then they mix it in a wok with the Singapore chilli sauce. Then in goes the head where they remove all that brain cheese to add to the sauce before serving it up over a bowl of noodles”.
He then waits in anticipation at a table for the enormous dish to be brought to him.
“I’m actually kind of scared. It feels like I’m about to eat a dinosaur under the sea. What are they feeding this guy?” he asked.
Once it was in front of him, he began to tuck in like it was “a giant turkey leg” and described the taste as similar to chicken but “so soft and so much sweeter”.
He finished off the clip, which now has over 1.4 million views, by encouraging his followers to try the dish for themselves.
However, that’s unlikely, given how unimpressed most of them seemed with his antics.
‘Too far’: Commenter backlash
Most were horrified at the thought of eating such a “majestic” animal.
“I normally love and support your content. This took it too far,” one fan wrote.
“That crab was majestic and took 15 years to grow just to be a meal for you. There’s something called having honour for the life around us,” said a second.
“Yes, people eat chicken and beef. But you don’t slaughter and kill them live in front of you? Maybe you should start filming that too and posting it? Unfollowing,” a third remarked.
“I’m not even a vegetarian but damn, 30 years just to end up on someone’s plate,” a fourth quipped, while another added: “I eat meat and seafood, but this seems unnecessary. We don’t have to eat everything.”
A spokesperson for Sydney Fish Market told news.com.au, “Retailers at Sydney Fish Market are advised to handle and process live crustaceans in accordance with the RSPCA guidelines”.
Some fans supported the blogger
Despite this, some comments praised the clip, with one saying the crab “looked good” and another admitting it was their “dream” experience to try.
“OMG that’s wild,” wrote someone else.
“Yum,” said another.
“I bet it tastes divine,” claimed a different user.
Mr Inskip has been contacted for comment.
