Aussie’s mind-blowing snack discovery

Aussies have been left mind blown after a shopper discovered how a popular chip, sold in Woolies and Coles, is actually made.

A shopper’s discovery about a common supermarket snack has left many Aussies stunned by the little-known fact.

TikTok user, Nia, took to the platform recently to share her revelation about the cult-favourite item, Harvest Snaps Baked Pea Crisps.

She said she has loved the chip, sold in Woolies and Coles, for “years” and always thought it was made from just dehydrated peas, given the pea pod-like shape.

However, she has just realised the savoury snack obtains its shape during the manufacturing process, describing herself as “the dumbest woman alive” for only now noticing.

Calbee, the Japanese company behind the popular snack food, has since responded after her video went viral, amassing almost 400,000 views since it was shared last week.

“Harvest Snaps are proudly made with green peas, which are milled in-house and then shaped into pods before being baked — not fried — for a crunchy, better for you snack,” a spokesperson for the brand told news.com.au.

“We have never claimed these are dehydrated peas, and our packaging clearly outlines the ingredients and nutritional profile.

“We believe in making better-for-you snacks that are both fun and transparent, and we encourage consumers to read labels and enjoy a wide range of veggie options.”

Shopper's 'mind blowing' discovery about popular supermarket chip

Nia, a self-declared super fan of Harvest Snaps Baked Pea Crisps, described the chip as a “yummy snack” she had “been eating for years” before admitting she had mistakenly believed “these gorgeous green bean peas” were simply dehydrated pea pods.

She then held up one of the baked crisps to the camera, and asked: “Does this not look like a dried pea?”

She later tagged the Harvest Snaps brand account and asked them: “How many times a day do you get people realising this?”

The brand quickly responded and set the record straight.

“We start with whole green peas (we mill it in house), then we form them into fun pod shapes and bake it for the perfect crunch. You’ll find that veggies are listed as our very first ingredient,” a comment from Harvest Snap’s TikTok account read.

The ingredients indicate that the snack is made of 68 per cent Green Peas and also includes rice, seasoning, sugar, maltodextrin, yeast extract, and vegetable oil, among other things.

Her video was quickly flooded with responses from people who were equally as surprised.

“I consider myself to be relatively intelligent, and I too just thought they were dehydrated peas for soooo long,” one user admitted.

“HUH, I thought I was eating VEGETABLES,” another snack-lover confessed.

“Wait … are they not? I totally thought so too,” yet another replied.

However, others were stumped as to how people could be so mistaken, saying it was “obvious” they weren’t made from entirely peas.

“Girl, have you ever had fresh peas before? They look nothing like that,” one claimed.

“It hadn’t even occurred to me people might think these are dried pea pods, not pea pod-shaped chips,” a second wrote.

“Babe, you can see the seam on the end where it’s come out of the machine,” someone else pointed out.

Harvest Snaps Baked Pea Crisps packets feature an image of two pea pods on the front, including one that is burst open to show the green vegetable inside.
