FISHOS who may have been catching too many mud crabs and undersized fish may have lured police to their door.

The fishos may be reeled in after a walker found a USB memory stick at Katherine Low Level on Thursday, which included photos of the haul.

It held a photo of 11 necked barramundi and two threadfin salmon, and a photo of 12 barramundi and two queenfish. Another photo included about two dozen crabs.

A Katherine man, who declined to be named, brought the photos to police.

"I don't know what kind of people I'm dealing with here," he said.

"They're definitely not commercial fishermen.

"We were just appalled at what we saw.

"I really did feel it raises the issue that we've redneck idiots out there destroying country and wildlife."

One photo showed a vehicle and an NT plate.

"These people are in a whole lot of trouble.

"It won't be too hard to find them," he said.

The man said he thought the photos may have been taken in a Darwin creek.

The barramundi limit in the Territory is five fish longer than 55cm per person, or three fish per person on the Daly and Mary rivers. There are no restrictions on the other species found.

The mud crab limit is 10 crabs per person to a maximum of 30 per boat.

It's believed the photos were taken in 2011.

Police have been investigating the find.
