EAST Arnhem communities are being told to buckle down and prepare for the wrath of incoming severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor, with the system now at category 3 strength.
The system is currently sitting above the northern Coral Sea with wind gusts of up to 205km/h and is expected to intensify to a category 4 system before making landfall on the eastern side of Cape York Peninsula Monday afternoon or evening.
Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor will have significant impacts on Cape York Peninsula with very destructive winds, storm tide, abnormally high tides and heavy rainfall all expected, before it is expected to emerge in the Gulf of Carpentaria on Wednesday.

While Cyclone Trevor may weaken as it crosses Cape York Peninsula, its strength and favourable environmental conditions mean the system is expected to re-intensify quickly once it moves over the warm waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
The Bureau of Meteorology said: “There is high confidence that (Tropical Cyclone) Trevor will reach severe Tropical Cyclone Strength in the Gulf. NT residents right around the Gulf need to take this seriously and be prepared.”

Trevor is expected to be a relatively large system with impacts felt well away from the centre of the system, with residents between Nhulunbuy and the NT/Queensland border warned to be on high alert.
