A COLD front is sweeping across the Territory, causing temperatures to plummet – and there is no end in sight as south east winds continue to bring a chill up north.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Sally Cutter said Darwinites could expect temperatures below 20C to continue well into next week.
“We have had a number of highs come through the Great Australian Bight that has brought the cool air up to the Top End,” she said.
“We have another surge in wind coming through tomorrow and then we are expecting those winds to calm down over the weekend, but the cool conditions will persist into next week.”
The coldest forecast across the Territory this week is on Friday, with Darwin expected to hit a minimum of 16C, Katherine 8C and Alice Springs 0C.
“When the winds eventually die down the temperature should come up a little but we are probably going to see it come up very gradually,” Ms Cutter said.
“I would be keeping your jumper out, because it is going to be cold for a bit longer,” she said.
Kate Tomes has lived in the Northern Territory for the past 12 years and thinks “this is the coldest snap she has experienced”.
“It’s actually been a really nice reprieve,” she said.
The mother of two was rugged up with her little ones Emma and Hamish on the Skyline Ferris Wheel with grandmother Nana Calvert who said it was the best dry season she had experienced in Darwin while visiting her daughter.
