THE Territory’s highest tourism accolades will not be awarded in 2020, following the abolition of the NT’s tourism industry under coronavirus.

Following news from the Australian Tourism Industry Council that the Australian tourism awards will not proceed, the Brolga Northern Territory awards have also been cancelled.

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture acting chief executive Andrew Hopper said with no further award for entrants to proceed to, the Territory awards had been made redundant.

“To be in the running to win an Australian Tourism Award, entrants must first enter and win via their state and territory award programs,” he said.

“With the absence of a national award program for our NT Gold Winners to progress to, we have decided to not proceed in 2020.”

Mr Hopper said it was important for businesses to put their resources towards restarting sustainably.

“This will enable our NT tourism organisations to focus on their businesses and prepare for reopening without the distraction of also trying to prepare an awards submission,” he said.

“We look forward to holding the Brolga Northern Territory Tourism Awards to recognise and encourage our NT tourism businesses to strive for excellence in every area of their operations again in 2021.”
