“Any solutions for t-shirts that are too big?”

An Aussie mum has taken to the Australian School Mums Facebook group asking how to alter her daughter’s school shirt, as she’s about to begin school this year.

“Any solutions for tshirts that are too big? Mainly the length,” she wrote.

“This is the smallest size school tshirt (a very generous size 2). I would prefer her to wear school tshirts but the length might not be the best for playing and sitting down on the mat. She is still three years old so I don’t think tucking it in is something she’ll do.”

Being located in WA, the mum clarified that her daughter will be going into her year of kindergarten pre-compulsory schooling, meaning she’ll be attending five days a fortnight - far too many to have a shirt hanging around her knees!

Though mums flooded to the comments telling her to hem it, there was one solution in particular which stood out.

“Iron on tape is great!”

A number of mums suggested an alternative to traditional hemming which would be far less permanent - using some kind of hemming tape.

“Hemming tape - it’s iron-on and can be pulled away/lengthened when needed,” one commenter said.

“this! The iron on tape is great,” another agreed.

“I just had it altered and brought up - iron on tape would work too if if you don't want it to be permanent,” said a third.

The original poster said she’d never heard of it before, and was ecstatic as it meant she could avoid taking the shirt to get hemmed properly.

An easier and more affordable option

Hemming tape is a popular and simple solution for taking anything up, from curtains and other heavier textiles to clothing.

The product is not only convenient, given that all you need to do is iron it on after applying like double-sided tape, but it’s also incredibly affordable, with different options available for as little as $3 from Big W or Spotlight.

So, if you’re not ready to make the commitment of cutting or hemming, this may be the way to go!
