Aussies are furious over this 'gross' new gym trend

"Not only is this so daggy, it's just so impractical and dangerous too," someone wrote.

This 'gross' new Aussie gym trend needs to go

Apparently, there's one thing Aussies hate more than Crocs...

People rocking them in the gym.

Yep, you read that correctly.

In a fashion faux pas, gym-goers are sporting the divisive shoes during their workouts. And to make it worse — they're pairing them with socks.

This sartorial choice, if you can even call it that, has sparked a wide array of opinions online about everything from aesthetics to safety concerns.

The peculiar new gym footwear trend

Initially spotted in the basketball and football A-leagues, this questionable style has trickled down onto gym floors nationwide.

It's not a subtle infiltration, either. TikTok has blown up with videos of gym rats wearing the peculiar and potentially dangerous footwear combo while lifting weights or running on the treadmill.

One man claimed, "Crocs give you power," while another woman said they "have a hold on her" and someone else insisted they were "elite" to train in.

"Not only is this so daggy and gross, it's just so impractical"

But it's left people scratching their heads, wondering why anyone would choose to wear them.

One person warned gyms were "full of germs" that could be picked up through sweaty socks, because Crocs don’t offer the same coverage as closed-toe shoes.

Another person asked, "Being straight up, I don’t care what you wear to a gym but I have seen so many guys in my gym wearing socks and Crocs, even doing leg exercises, shouldn’t this f**k up your grip on your feet and you’ll slide around?"

Then this person claimed they've "seen so many people have accidents in their sandals then turn up in proper footwear a week later."

"Not only is this so daggy and gross, it's just so impractical and dangerous too," someone else wrote.

One TikToker known as 'Chongybrah' even said his gym banned Crocs due to too many people having accidents in them.

A sign out the front of the gym read: "Due to health and safety reasons, it is mandatory for you to wear enclosed footwear while attending the gym."

An online physique coach weighs in

Online physique coach, Phillip Naselli, suggested on TikTok that people might be opting for shoes such as Crocs at the gym as they're "more comfortable and easier to take off when you're performing an exercise that requires you to take your shoes off."

Sometimes people prefer to go barefoot when performing exercises such as deadlifts and leg press in order to keep their legs and spine in the right positions.

He adds, "But don't wear them to the gym. If you drop a weight on your foot, not even those jewels on them are going to save you. Just protect yourself."
