Cafes are often home to a hodgepodge of people.
You might go there to sit and read, grab a coffee with a friend, study or even do a job interview.
But, because of that, there can be tension around how you should and shouldn’t act, and how loud is too loud.
A Melbourne woman has taken to social media to ask just that - though she didn’t get quite the response she was anticipating.

“Are we overreacting or is this extremely entitled?”
A Melbourne Redditor has taken to the platform after a confusing interaction with a group of mums and children at a cafe.
The woman said that she and her friends were sitting down studying, when the group came and sat right by her - despite there being a number of other options available.
“Are we overreacting or is this extremely entitled?” the woman asked.
“15 other seating options and this loud group of women with their loud kids sat right behind a few of us studying/reading.
“We are lightly debating this within our study group.”
The woman suggested that the group should have sat elsewhere - away from others studying quietly. But, not everyone was so sure.
“Personally, if I'm going to make noise or talk, I opt to sit where others are doing the same - or at least not sit near others that are clearly seeking a quiet space. To me that's considerate,” she said.
“One of us is split and one thinks you cannot expect people to consider others in a public space like this.

“Let's not deny the loud and rude exist”
Some commenters agreed with the poster, saying it would be unfair of the group to be loud directly next to people studying.
“Let's not deny the loud and rude exist. I've been in quite a few restaurants seated beside tables of neanderthals yelling at the top of their voices. Only solution is to move to a table far away or leave,” said one person.
“I think it's rude if there were a bunch of other tables available and they sat down right next to you reading and started being really loud,” another added.
“Very entitled of you, yes”
But, the majority were not in the same boat, with many adding that she was the entitled one for expecting others to be quiet in public.
“Yeah it's a cafe not a library. Can't expect people to be quiet,” said one person.
“Very entitled of you, yes. You’re studying in a public place, there will be noise. Grow up,” said another.
“I'm sorry but there’s nothing wrong with people chatting in public places, especially in a cafe,” said a third.
“It's a café, so you're going to have to put up with other people while you're there. It's a stretch to think that other people are going to deliberately go out of their way to make sure you have a nice barrier of quiet space,” another agreed.
Some even said it was the poster’s choice for going to a cafe to study in the first place - recommending a park or library instead.
“Yes. You chose to study at a place designed for social gathering, that’s on you,” said one person.
“Go study and read at the library,” another agreed.
“So entitled of you - go to a library or park. They would also have had limited seating options as allowing for prams,” a third pointed out.
The poster said she’d been to this particular cafe multiple times to study - however after this, I doubt she’ll be heading back.
