A Grinch sequel is the only thing we want for Christmas this year

The rumour mill is running wild again, which has us thinking (and praying) it’s true.

The holiday season might be getting a lot merrier, as rumours swirl around Hollywood once again about Jim Carrey reprising his role as the Grinch in an upcoming sequel to the festive classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." 

Directed by Ron Howard, the original film recently marked its 23rd anniversary.

Now, it seems Universal Pictures is gearing up for a sequel to celebrate the enduring popularity of Dr. Seuss's iconic character.

Could it be?

According to reports, Carrey, now 61, is set to don the Grinch's iconic green fur and grumpy demeanour once again, returning after a hiatus of more than two decades. 

Giant Freakin Robot fueled the speculation, stating, "Jim Carrey is returning to Universal Pictures for The Grinch 2, once again playing Dr. Seuss's most famous and ill-tempered creation." 

Fans are buzzing with anticipation, hoping to witness Carrey's return to the beloved character.

We hope he’s throwing us off the trail

This potential return to Whoville comes as a surprise, considering Carrey's previous reservations about sequels. 

In 2017, he expressed concerns about reprising roles, citing the tendency for sequels to be driven by commercial interests. 

"At least the two I've done, they were characters I enjoyed doing, but I did find myself almost parroting myself at that point," he admitted.

Despite Carrey's semi-retirement announcement in 2022, where he expressed a desire for a break and emphasised his spiritual life over the demands of the acting industry, the allure of revisiting The Grinch seems to have pulled him back into the cinematic spotlight. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remains his most recent cinematic outing, adding an air of mystery to the rumoured Grinch sequel.

Give the fans what they want

When we shared the rumour a few months ago, many Kidspot readers were just as excited as we were at the prospects of a sequel. 

“I bloody hope to god this is true!” shared one.

“My Christmas dreams are coming true,” added another.

Please Santa, can we have another Grinch?

As of now, there are no upcoming movies or TV series starring Carrey in pre or post-production, according to IMDB. 

This adds an element of suspense to the speculated Grinch sequel, leaving fans eagerly awaiting official confirmation from Carrey and Universal Pictures.

But until then, we'll have the first film on repeat.
