The fifth annual Darwin International Laksa Festival has been announced for October, a month ahead of its usual November date.

Last year more than 2800 laksa and laksa-inspired dishes were tasted around the Territory during the month-long event, including laksa iced coffee, laksagna, sweet and chilli laksa waffles, laksa arancini, and laksa chicken pizza.

This year cooks can compete for four categories — Darwin’s Best Laksa, Regional Best Laksa, Darwin’s Best ‘Inspired By’ Laksa dish and Regional Best ‘Inspired By’ Laksa dish — with secret laksa connoisseurs visiting businesses to taste and score their dishes.

The winners will be announced at the Festival Finale on October 29.

Business, Jobs and Training minister Paul Kirby said the event was a celebration of the Territory’s multicultural community, hospitality venues and shared love of Laksa.

“(It) is fast becoming one of our most keenly anticipated and competitive food festivals,” Mr Kirby said.

“It gives businesses and chefs the opportunity to create new dishes, and even drinks, with a twist on the classic Territory laksa.”

Mr Kirby said attendees would be able to earn points and win prizes through a new app, by eating, trying and voting for their favourite dishes.

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said the festival highlighted “what we all love about living in the Territory – our multicultural community, our vibrant hospitality industry and a good laksa”.
