When the Territory’s pubs, clubs and live music venues were forced to close due to COVID-19 restrictions, hundreds of local performers and arts workers were left out of work and unable to do what they do best.

So, two members of Darwin’s entertainment industry decided to do something about it, and launched the Darwin Live Gig Guide Facebook lifestreaming events.

The events see local musicians, comedians and DJs performing live sets from a studio in Darwin straight into the homes of thousands of viewers across the world.

Darwin Live Gig Guide founder Rick Knight said he wanted to give artists a platform to keep performing during the pandemic.

“We’ve provided a stage for them to do what they do, which is entertain audiences,” Mr Knight said.

“They (the artists) also felt like they didn’t appreciate how much they needed to have that in their life.

“This was almost unintentional, that it’s had this positive effect on mental health for the artists.”

He said another aim of the lifestreaming project was to support the artists, who had lost so much of their income, financially.

“They’ve spoken to us about the weddings, corporate and pub gigs they had booked months in advance,” Mr Knight said.

“Within the space of three days that all just dissolved into nothing.”

The Darwin Live Gig Guide has set up a GoFundMe page where viewers can donate something to the artists in return for their performances, if they want.

“We’re not making any money out of this but if people love what they’re seeing and would normally buy them a beer, they can donate that straight into the pockets of the artists,” Mr Knight said.

So, check out Darwin Live Gig Guide for yourself tonight or tomorrow night if you’re missing your live Territory gigs.
