Amy Schumer has hit out at commentary over her “puffy” face during a recent TV interview.
The US comedian, 42, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, where she appeared to be sporting a much different look than usual.
Viewers were left baffled by her appearance, questioning whether the actress had undergone cosmetic surgery.
Responding to online comments, Schumer agreed she was “puffier” than normal, before revealing the upsetting reason why.
“Thank you so much for everyone’s input about my face. I’ve enjoyed feedback and deliberation about my appearance as all women do for almost 20 years,” Schumer began in an Instagram post.
“And you’re right, it is puffier than normal right now. I have endometriosis, an auto immune disease that every woman should read about.”
Endometriosis, which affects roughly 176 million women worldwide, is a chronic disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing severe pain and infertility.
Schumer has long been open about her struggle with the condition, and last year called it the “lonely disease”, due to women’s pain often being disregarded by health professionals.
“There are some medical and hormonal things going on in my world right now, but l’m okay,” Schumer continued in her latest post.
“Historically, women’s bodies have barely been studied medically compared to men. The book ‘all in her head’ does a good job explaining this.
“I also believe a woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation. But I wanted to take the opportunity to advocate for self love and acceptance of the skin you’re in.
“Like every other women/person, some days I feel confident and good as hell, and others I want to put a bag over my head.”
Schumer had a hysterectomy, a surgical removal of her uterus, for the disease in 2021. In Australia, endometriosis affects nearly 1 million women.
The mother-of-one said on social media at the time that women were “made to feel like they are just supposed to tough it out,” adding, “but that is bulls**t.”
“You know, for months, I had been complaining of pain … it was just this pain you can’t see. There is the inclination to always think a woman is just being dramatic,” Schumer said in the 2022 docuseries The Check Up with Dr. David Agus.
“I’ve been in so much pain, you know, my whole life — not just the week of my period.”
