Taste the Territory’s delights with culinary legend Jimmy Shu, as new series showcasing NT food scene hits television screens on Thursday
JIMMY Shu – a true pioneer of the Territory’s culinary scene – is bringing his wealth of more than 50 years of knowledge to living rooms around the nation this week with the premiere of eight-part TV series Jimmy Shu’s Taste of the Territory.

JIMMY Shu – a true pioneer of the Territory’s culinary scene – is bringing his wealth of more than 50 years of knowledge to living rooms around the nation this week.
Jimmy Shu’s Taste of the Territory, which premieres on SBS on Thursday night, is an eight-part gastronomic journey through the multicultural culinary melting pot of the NT.
The 71-year-old, best known for his Hanuman establishments, said he was approached “out of the blue” by writer, producer and director Naina Sen to take part in the series.
Mr Shu said that despite the hard times that had fallen on hospitality because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a good time to showcase the NT while offering viewers a break from coronavirus news.

“It’s a very challenging time, hopefully the human brain can keep on innovating and we can adapt,” he said.
“This is a true test of survival of the fittest.
“The show couldn’t have come at a better time.”
The show traverses a range of food topics, including native bush tucker, multicultural Darwin cuisines, as well as Mr Shu’s own journey as an Australian immigrant raised in Sri Lanka by Chinese parents.

“Our flavours have matured, thanks to the migrants,” he said.
“If you took a snapshot 30 years to now, you would think it’s part of Asia here.
“You wouldn’t miss Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam – it’s all here in the one place.
“This show is part travel log, it is also a food odyssey, with a little bit of cooking as well.
“It’s not just a food show, there’s a lot of culture involved.
“There are also bush foods, which are really underrated.”

So where will Mr Shu be when the show airs?
Tending to his Territory food empire.
“I will be delivering food, and I’m not shy to say that,” he said.
“There are people who are surprised when I bring them food.
“I do enjoy it, expect the unexpected.”
Jimmy Shu’s Taste of the Territory airs Thursday night at 8.30pm on SBS Food.
