A POPULAR Darwin venue has been banned from hosting live music events over numerous noise and foul language complaints from neighbours until a $100,000 solution to the problem is installed.

The NT Liquor Commission imposed the ban on Marrara’s PINT club, but declined to fine the venue over repeated noise complaints because of the cost of installing a noise limiting device.

The ban is the culmination of a battle between the residents of Sunningdale Court and the venue since 2017 when the club built an outdoor sound stage in its beer garden for live music performances.

The residents of the street, 240m away from the venue, made noise complaints over the venue’s First Sunday Blues Club events on October 6, November 3 and December 1 in 2019.

A complaint was also made about the Darwin Blues Rock Festival on October 19, 2019.

Sunningdale Court residents also reported foul language from an anti-fracking mother-daughter duo who performed on Australia Day 2019.

According to the complaint made to the Liquor Commission, the mother and daughter sang a fracking protest song to the tune of Advance Australia Fair which included the word “f**k” three times.

The residents said the foul language was clearly audible in their lounge room.

The Liquor Commission heard that on some occasions, the noise from the venue was so loud residents had to close windows and doors in order to have a conversation.

In handing down its decision, the Commission said PINT club did not own a sound system and to install the limiter it would have to purchase one or come to an arrangement with the business it hires them from.

It estimated that the cost of implementing the noise limiting device would be in the region of $100,000.

The PINT club would now also be required to notify the community of live music events through its Facebook page.

The club was fined $1630 in March last year for previous noise complaints and plans to change the stage to face away from the aggrieved residents’ homes.
