I’m very gullible, says Anja Nissen, but The Voice victory was not rigged
SHE admits to being gullible, but Anja Nissen is clear on one thing: Her victory on The Voice was not rigged.
Music Tours
Don't miss out on the headlines from Music Tours. Followed categories will be added to My News.
THE Voice winner Anja Nissen talks to Cameron Adams about her music plans, dealing with the paparazzi — and whether her victory was rigged.
ONE DAY WONDER
Even Jack White would be impressed with how long it took The Voice winner Anja Nissen to record her self-titled album.
How long? One single day, recording a swag of cover versions the Wednesday after the show’s grand final last week.
“We worked from 9am until 1am,” Nissen says. “It was hectic but it was more fun than it sounds.
“I did some songs I didn’t do on the show by Jason Mraz, John Mayer and Tom Petty — I like the idea of doing a female version of a male’s song.”
AIMING BIG WITH WILL POWER
Nissen is now planning her first original album, which she “definitely” wants released this year.
The 18-year-old will head to Los Angeles after The Voice Final 8 tour to start writing songs.
Her dream collaborators? “David Foster, Diane Warren, Clive Davis. I’ve been writing songs since I was nine, I just have to find my niche.”
Having will.i.am as a mentor won’t hurt getting A-list access.
“I will owe him for the rest of my life,” Nissen says. “He’s been very hands-on with my career so far.”
PAPARAZZI SMEAR
With instant fame comes instant pain — Nissen was papped at the airport last week.
“Of course they took a photo when I was taking my jacket and shoes off to go through the scanner. It’s a bit confronting when you’re at the airport and a guy is taking your photo.
“He came up to apologise but then was saying, ‘So, where are you meeting the rest of The Voice guys?’ and trying to swindle information out of me.
“I think I’m very gullible. There’s pros and cons, I just have to find a way to deal with it.”
THE VOICE WAS NOT RIGGED
Conspiracy theorists online (where else) used the new fan-voting component on this year’s The Voice to claim wildcard Nissen’s win was rigged.
“It’s not rigged at all, I can tell you that,” she says.
“It’s a great show to be on, because it’s all very even.
“There’s no favouritism at all in the show. I never felt like I was favoured in the show.
“They make an effort to make it a very even playing field, they go out of their way to make sure everyone gets the same level of publicity.”
