Missy Higgins has left her adoring fans in tears on her current sold-out victory lap of Australia with new songs sharing intimate details of her heartbreaking divorce.

The award-winning songwriter pierced everyone’s aching hearts on Saturday at the ICC Sydney Theatre, the biggest show on The Second Act tour, with the song Blue Velvet Dress.

Higgins introduced the song to 6000 diehard fans of all ages as capturing the moment her marriage “blew up”, ending in a phone call with ex-husband Dan Lee just minutes before she was due on stage to perform in her favourite blue velvet dress at the ABC’s New Year’s Eve concert in 2021.

Higgins told the audience how she fell sobbing into the arms of her bandmates backstage after the performance as the fireworks exploded above Sydney Harbour.

“Still wearing my favourite blue velvet dress, singing to strangers, my heart in shreds,” she sang.

The tour, which also celebrates the 20th anniversary of her historic debut record The Sound of White, opens with a set of Higgins playing some of the new songs expected to feature on her upcoming album, also titled The Second Act, out in September.

After sharing Song for Sammy, the beautiful ode to her nine-year-old son about becoming a parent and released in 2019, Higgins shared the challenge she faced to write a song for her five-year-old daughter Luna.

A Complicated Truth is the result and brought the tears flowing again with the lyric: “I’ll always love your daddy, because together we made you.”

Elsewhere in the opening set before she launched into playing The Sound of White in full, she shared other confessional, raw and intimate tracks about the aftermath of her split with Lee including When Four Became Three, and the slightly optimistic title track The Second Act which opens with “I think I’m ready for whatever comes next / How long can I scold myself for flunking the biggest test?”

Higgins also invited musician and comedian Tim Minchin on stage to join her on Carry You, the sublime ballad they made for his hit series Upright.

And while she wore her bleeding heart on her sleeve - and on her back on the couture designed shorts suit and fringed jacket outfit for the second set - she was equally hilarious in comparing her modest two costume changes to Taylor Swift, and sharing tales of re-entering the dating scene.

She also confirmed one of her most loved songs The Special Two was in fact a musical apology to her older sister Nicola over a “crossed line” with a shared crush.

Nicola’s portrait of her acclaimed songwriter sibling is a finalist in the 2024 Archibald Prize and currently on display at the Art Gallery of NSW.

The Second Act tour continues through until August 8 with more sold out shows in Sydney, Geelong and Canberra with the new album out on September 6.
