Guy Sebastian will bring an urban vibe to the good old power ballad at 2015 Eurovision Song Contest

GUY Sebastian has copped flak for it, but he wants to win Eurovision — now he has just five days to pick his song. This is his strategy.

Guy Sebastian considering wearing a 'flanno' on Eurovision

GUY Sebastian has hinted his nod to Australiana for 2015 Eurovision could be the humble “flanno” shirt.

Named as our wildcard contestant for the world’s biggest song contest in Vienna, Sebastian has discounted the classic Italian suit for his Eurovision uniform preferring a more urban vibe.

And he just couldn’t pull of a beard and a dress like last year’s winner Conchita Wurst.

“And it might involve flanno. It’s very Australian,” he said.

Sebastian pre-empted the dissenters to the decision by invoking that revered pop philosopher Taylor Swift, saying “haters gonna hate, hate, hate”.

He also shot down any speculation this was a “calculated career move” insisting he would pick the song which best represented his vocal talents and give Australia a shot at winning.

His first choice was a previous Australia-only single Get Along but rules dictate the entrant’s song cannot have been released before September 2014.

Sebastian has just five days to decide which power ballad from his album Madness, released in November, re-record it and shoot a video.

There are a few big vocal options on the record which haven’t been released as a single, with closing track The Pause standing out as having the most potential.

Sebastian revealed he found out he was a contender to represent Australia when a mate found him listed in a form guide on a betting agency site.

“I wasn’t even the favourite. I think it was Samantha Jade and Jess Mauboy,” he said.

SBS have campaigned for the past four years to further Australia’s involvement in Eurovision — despite obviously not being a part of Europe.

The organisers were no doubt amused at our fascination with this often cheesy display of kitsch, with SBS managing director Michael Ebeid suggesting they probably said yes so we would stop annoying them.

But director of Australia’s coverage of the event Paul Clarkes, is taking it all very seriously now.

“We want to win. We want to win Eurovision and Guy is capable of winning. Serbia won the first year they competed in 2007,” Clarke said.

“He’s a great songwriter, there’s so much depth to his songs and the ones we hae short-listed have real grandeur because we want tingles.”

SBS will broadcast the semi-finals and finals from Vienna in May live from 5am so Australian fans can vote as well as producing packages for evening viewing.
