The masters of punk Green Day have finally landed in Australia to get off their epic Saviors tour.
A huge stadium production with some of the most mind-blowing visuals and props doing the round of the global tour circuit, the epic show celebrates the 30th anniversary of their breakthrough record Dookie and 20th birthday of the American Idiot album.
And there’s a smattering of songs from their 14th studio record Saviors, releaed last year.
Their three shows in Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast kick off a big 2025 for stadium rock with Metallica and Oasis returning later this year with AC/DC strongly tipped to bring their Power Up shows here this year.
Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool have been regular tourists to Australia since they broke onto the global charts with Dookie and its singles “Basket Case” and “Longview” became punk anthems.
“Australia has always been a big stop for us,” bassist Dirnt said during an interview last year.
“I feel like you guys really understand rock ‘n’ roll, and it’s great to be around people that … celebrate rock and roll and has so many great heroes to its name.”
Ameican rockers AFI and Melbourne punk band Private Function are the opening acts.
They have been playing a truncated setlist of 25 songs on the Asian leg of the tour ahead of the Australian shows compared to last year’s shows which played the full albums of Dookie and American Idiot and ran to 37 tracks.
But the Australian tour poster promises Dookie and American Idiot “in their entirety”.
The band open the east coast tour at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on Saturday, then head to Sydney’s Engie Stadium on Monday and CBus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast on Wednesday.
Up to 60,000 Melbourne concertgoers have been warned there will be significant transport disruptions on Saturday and to check Public Transport Victoria websites and social media channels for updates about bus replacement services on metro and regional lines.
