It will have been eight years between VBs for Green Day when the American rockers bring their mammoth Saviors stadium tour here in March.

Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool have made good on the promise they made almost a year ago to return to their happy rock hunting ground of Australia in early 2025.

The adored punk rock trio, who last performed here in 2017 on their Revolution Radio world tour, open at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on March 1 and then head to Engie Stadium in Sydney on March 3 and CBUS Super Stadium, Gold Coast on March 5.

The ambitious shows celebrate their seminal 1994 breakthrough album Dookie album and 2004 punk rock opera American Idiot as well as favourite tracks from throughout their career up to this year’s new record Saviors.

“Australia has always been a big stop for us,” bassist Dirnt said.

“I feel like you guys really understand rock ‘n’ roll, and it’s great to be around people that … celebrate rock and roll and have so many great heroes to its name.”

Green Day has been pulling sold-out crowds and beers, although Armstrong is now sober, in Australia for three decades.

Like many of their American peers who first started touring here during the mid 1990s, Green Day would make regular stops in Australia to launch new records or tours, holding old school press conferences where they would sample VB, the rock’n’roll beer of choice in the altrock era.

“Whenever I’d walk up to a bar (in Australia), they’d say ‘VB, right?’ But no, (we never got an) official endorsement,” Armstrong said.

The band have long credited the influence of Australian rock on their music, with AC/DC among their heroes.

“Angus was one of my first teachers; one of the first albums I ever bought was For Those About To Rock. We always look to AC/DC and the sound of those classic records for what makes them sonically special,” Armstrong said.

One of the highlights of a Green Day stadium show happens before the band even walk on stage.

Ever since footage of 65,000 fans singing Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody in London’s Hyde Park in 2017 went viral, it has become a part of the show for the audience to sing the track before Green Day arrive on stage.

Green Day have announced fellow Californian rockers AFI will join them at the Australian concerts with local supports yet to be confirmed.
