MATT Healey of English rock band The 1975 talks success, the pressures of a new album and working with One Direction.

GOING GLOBAL

English indie rockers The 1975 have been a big deal in their homeland for a while — their self-titled debut went to No.1 there last year. But they are starting to make waves around the world too, playing this year’s Coachella festival as well as our Big Day Out. “It’s obviously starting to happen down in Australia for us after a lot of hard work because when we released the shows down there they sold out in about two minutes,” frontman Matt Healy says.

SECOND GUESSING

Healy says the band is in no hurry to record the follow-up to their acclaimed debut, which he now describes as “an ‘80s movie soundtrack”. In fact he is loath to say what direction it might take because it could completely change. “Me writing an album that I know people are going to hear will be weird,” he says. “It’s that old saying ‘nothing behind me, everything ahead of me’. Life on the road ... I think will play a part in the next record.”

HEADING IN THE ONE DIRECTION

Healy has been writing with the world’s biggest boy band, One Direction — at their special request. “I went down and met them and started to work on a track,” he says. “I don’t know what’s going on because we are the busiest band in the world along with One Direction. So to get me and one of One Direction in the same room is going to be a f---ing nightmare. But I’m going to write them a song — it’s not going to be One Direction featuring me.”

POP GOES THE ROCK STAR

As you might expect for a man prepared to work with One Direction, Healy says he’s open to pop, even if he’s in a rock band. “I spend a lot of my time in The 1975 trying to rein in my love of pop,” he says. “I have to make sure everything is pitched slightly left of centre, so to be smack bang in the middle and writing straight pop (for One Direction) is going to be interesting. But if it is massive — I’ll probably be defined by that one track, which will be really weird.”
