A boat on fire to honour fallen members of a Darwin boat club was the highlight of the Mega Annual Viking Funeral for newcomer Christian Kundig.
The New Zealand local said he has been in the Top End since January and tries to attend all the unique festivals and celebrations that he can.
“I’ve been recommended a lot of the multicultural festivals and it’s always quite fun to experience everything,” he said.
He remarked that the Viking Funeral was unlike much else he’s been to.
“It was definitely very impressive,” he said.
And like the vast majority of the attendees, Mr Kundig got in the spirit of the Norse gods and donned a costume.
“From the limited costumes that were available I managed to get a big kind of fur coat that represents more Jon Snow than Viking,” he said.
Mr Kundig said he was very impressed by the yearly spectacle of the burning of the boat.
“It took a while to take light but once it started it was quite exciting to watch,” he said.
Dinah Beach Cruising Yacht Association general manager Wendy McCallum said the typically-Territory night had been months in the planning.
“It takes months and months of organising,” she said.
“Picking the date is very important, it has to be a high tide on a Saturday night so that our Viking vessel actually floats through the channel.”
As is customary, the vessel in question will be set alight to honour a “passed sailors” from the last year.
“And in true Dinah Beach style we put on a really great party to celebrate,” Ms McCallum said.
