A CLASH of class and colour filled the lawns of Darwin Turf Club today for the combined Ladies’ Day and Derby Day event.
More than 1000 people attended the Turf Club in the lead-up to the highly anticipated Great Northern Darwin Cup.
Racegoer and Peacock Millinery owner Belinda Osborne was thrilled to be surrounded by the creativity of the combined event.
“It’s a bit of a faux pas to wear black on Ladies’ Day normally so when I heard it was going to be Derby Day and Ladies’ Day I was really excited to take the opportunity to wear black,” she said. “It’s a shame that we’ve only got the four races instead of the eight this year but we are so lucky that we can do this.
“We’ve all just got to do our part to keep it this way.”

Bec Forrest took the opportunity to express her love of colour on Ladies’ Day with a flowery blue ensemble.
“I can’t do black and white otherwise I look like Morticia Addams,” she laughed.
“I usually would go bright colour so I thought I’d go somewhere in between.”
Ms Forrest was decked out in local labels including Maria Koko and Embella.
She was thankful to be able to celebrate the carnival.
“We’re really grateful that we have this opportunity in the Territory,” she said.

Darwin Turf Club chief executive Brad Morgan said the organisation was overwhelmed by the support, with about 250 at the TAB Pavilion for Ladies’ Day.
He was elated to be able to continue the Cup Carnival through COVID-19.
“We really didn’t think we’d be here at some points during that period,” he said.
“Every week we were doing what we needed to do to keep racing going and increase our hygiene procedures and our social distancing.

“To get through that period and get to where we are today, with just the one race to go before we finalise the Carnival, is nothing short of remarkable.”
