THE fillies will be front and centre today as the Darwin Turf Club Ladies Day kicks off at the Fannie Bay racecourse.

While COVID-19 has meant Ladies Day and Derby Day have combined for a bumper day of races — it’s sure to be just as entertaining trackside with the Fashions on the Field expected to be hotly contested.

Three local judges will be eyeing off the outfits meticulously put together for the Fashions on the Field competition.

Darwin local Hannah McCourt has been making the most of the racing carnival by dressing up and heading down to the track with friends.

“I love the culture, it’s an excuse to dress up and the atmosphere is incredible,” she said.

“Watching the horse races, it’s awesome, they’re absolute machines.”

Ms McCourt said while the theme for Derby Day was black and white there was still opportunity to put some colour and creativity in to outfits.

“You can mix it up, even add a splash of colour in there with some earrings or a bag,” she said.

“I think you should absolutely dress up and do something fancy with a headpiece or something like that, or shoes.”

“Phil Cole Racing foreman Rhonda Cole said she was looking forward to two of her horses racing in the Derby.

“I’m just there purely with the horses so it’s good seeing everybody get out and make an effort to dress up and enjoy themselves,” she said.

Three-year-old filly Stroke of Magic and three-year-old gelding Seclusion will be representing the stable in the big race.

“She’s been going super and hitting the line in all our races lately,” Ms Cole said of Stroke of Magic.

“I think she will benefit from a bit more distance as well so they should be in there at the finish tomorrow.”
