Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson still have a close bond despite their looming divorce.
“I don’t know why my heart gets tossed around but I’m one of the lucky ones,” Simpson told People in an interview published Wednesday.
“At least I have my children and I still have Eric,” she continued, adding, “He’s still very much a part of my life and will always be.”
The With You singer, 44, and the former NFL player, 45, share three children: Maxwell, 12, Ace, 11, and Birdie, 5.
During the interview, Simpson also reflected on how much she has changed throughout her and Johnson’s 10-year relationship — and after their break-up.
“I’ve grown up so much. I can handle so much,” she said. “Maybe I’m just meant to love a lot of people in my life.”
Simpson was previously married to Nick Lachey from 2002 to 2006. She was also romantically linked to Johnny Knoxville, Adam Levine, John Mayer, Tony Romo and Billy Corgan before saying “I do” to Johnson in 2014.
The pop star reflected on how working on her forthcoming album, Nashville Canyon: Part 1, helped her navigate all the new changes in her life.
“Discovering this music is something I did on my own,” Simpson said. “Thank God I had Nashville, it was just a way of me owning myself and declaring it.”
Simpson said that, unlike the beginning of her music career, she now has autonomy over her craft.
“I am a woman now and I can do what I want and to have freedom in music — I think that’s what you’re going to feel in Nashville Canyon,” she said.
Last month, Page Six reported that Simpson’s break-up with Johnson played a part in inspiring her first album in 15 years.
“Jessica has been working on new music for a while, but with everything going on now, she feels it’s the perfect time to go full force with it,” a source exclusively told us at the time.
“She’s always journaling, and a few entries have evolved into songs about heartbreak and resilience. It’s been a very creative, albeit heartbreaking, time for her.”
The fashion designer and the retired athlete sparked separation speculation in November 2024 after Simpson posted a cryptic message about her new music. She further fuelled divorce gossip when she was spotted without her wedding ring on several occasions.
Simpson finally confirmed that she and Johnson were ending their marriage in January.
“Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage. Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them,” Simpson told People in a statement at the time.
“We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”
