An Australian bloke’s brazen attempt to attract the attention of Sydney Sweeney has paid off.
Local video creator Miles Shepherd, a co-host of the popular social media channel ‘Shepmates’, shared a video earlier this week to TikTok claiming he’d witnessed the Hollywood star emerging from the ocean like “a James Bond scene” while he was sunbathing on a beach on the Gold Coast.
“I was just sitting there, like this, on my towel,” he began, before re-enacting his gobsmacked reaction when he saw the Euphoria actress, 26, strutting on the sand in her green swimsuit.
“That’s probably genuinely what I looked like. I’m still trying to process it. Hopefully it wasn’t weird. But, what the hell?”
That original video, filmed at Currumbin Alley, has been watched by 3.2 million people as of Saturday morning, and has since, seemingly, caught the eye of Sweeney herself.
Taking to his social media with an update, Shepherd revealed Sweeney slid into his DMs on Instagram, where she wrote, “u should’ve said hi.”
“She must’ve seen my TikTok because she sent me a DM, and I sent her one back,” Shepherd said, posting screenshots of their exchange.
Shepherd went on to say his well-thought out response was “do or die”, as he attempted to ask the star out on a date. Bearing in mind, Sweeney is engaged to US restaurateur Jonathan Davino.
He added of his expertly-crafted reply: “I really set the tone with an ‘x’ in there so she knows my intentions … I don’t play no games. And I finished it off with a nice little emoji to lighten it up a bit.”
Hundreds of people left comments on Shepherd’s flurry of videos about Sweeney, saying they were “invested” in his quest to take her on a date.
It also attracted the attention of US fans, who found humour in Shepherd’s ultra-Aussie pronunciation, “Sydney Swoy-ney”.
The White Lotus star has been enjoying some down time in Australia this week, sharing photos to her Instagram as she enjoyed the sights from the southern end of the Gold Coast.
It comes after the star jetted back here earlier this month to complete reshoots for her upcoming rom-com, Anyone But You, co-starring Glen Powell, which they initially shot in March.
Production made global headlines at the time, with rumours swirling Sweeney and Powell had formed a romantic connection off-screen – which they’ve both since denied.
The movie, which comes out on Boxing Day, tells the story of Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) – whose initial attraction for one another descends into resentment after “something happens that turns their fiery hot attraction ice cold.”
he warring pair then find themselves both attending the same destination wedding in Australia, where they hatch a plan to pretend to be a couple.
It also stars My Best Friend’s Wedding actor Dermot Mulroney, Australian actress Rachel Griffiths and Barbie star Alexandra Shipp.
