ONE of Darwin’s most loved attractions is planning to reopen on June 5, with Pain and Glory the first movie to be shown on the Deck Chair Cinema’s screen this year.

The planned reopening is part of the third stage of easing coronavirus restrictions in the Northern Territory and another step towards the new normal.

Deck Chair Cinema general manager James Parker said that it was exciting to think about opening up again.

“We’re really excited, we’ve been closed for far too long and all our members have missed out on an entire program,” he said.

“Opening night is members only as we don’t know what our capacity will be yet and don’t want any of them to miss out on the opening night.”

Mr Parker said that planning for reopening was necessary but nothing was set in stone.

“We did talk to the COVID-19 Hotline and NT Major Events and they did ask not to put tickets on sale for another week but we’ve been able to put the program out there just for a teaser,” Mr Parker said.

“We’re just trying to give everyone something nice to get excited about.”

The cinema’s physical preparation is also taking place with woodchips for the seating area arriving yesterday but there will probably be some changes from previous years’ set-up.

“We’re lucky in the fact we’re a large outdoor space, our rows were coincidentally spaced 1.5m apart to begin with and we have a lot of space to play with,” Mr Parker said.

“Modifying the lawn to comply with guidelines is quite easy.”

Pain and Glory will be screened along with Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love on the opening night for members only, while Jojo Rabbit, H is for Happiness and Parasite will also feature as popular films at the outdoor cinema this year.
