Schools in Melbourne’s biggest growth area are going from strength to strength in the classroom, with Wyndham students leading the NAPLAN results across Melbourne’s west.

Westbourne Grammar’s Grade 5 students produced outstanding results across the board in this year’s NAPLAN tests, scoring an average of 557.6 — the highest of any primary school in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

Students from the school — located in Truganina — performed “well above” the state average in writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

Penleigh & Essendon Grammar, Heathdale Christian College, Bacchus Marsh Grammar and St Leo the Great primary school in Altona North made up the rest of the top five best performing primary schools in the west.

Alamanda K-9 College in Point Cook posted the best results out of the government schools in the western suburbs, with results in four subjects above the state average.

Werribee’s Suzanne Cory High School was the clear schoolyard leader of secondary schools in Melbourne’s west, with a whopping average score of 696.4.

The school also ranked in the top four across the state alongside some of Melbourne’s most prestigious schools including Melbourne High, Nossal High School and MacRobertson.

Suzanne Cory High School principal Martha Goodridge-Kelly previously told the Herald Sun the school always strives to improve.

“Our students know they are part of a supportive, caring community and that sense of belonging empowers them to take risks and strive for excellence,” she said.

“At the same time, we never settle – we are always asking how we can do better, both in terms of teaching and learning and in supporting the wellbeing of our students.”

The school also achieved some of the best student to teacher ratios and attendance rates in the state.
