2025 NAPLAN results reveal Victoria’s most improved schools in reading, writing and numeracy
2025 NAPLAN results have revealed the top 20 most-improved schools in Victoria, where students are achieving above average results in reading, writing and numeracy. See if your school made the cut.
Outer-suburban state school students are surging ahead in reading, writing and numeracy, propelling Victoria to its best-ever NAPLAN performance.
The 2025 results, to be released Wednesday, offer the first post-Covid view of students’ progress over the past two years.
Albanvale Primary was among the standout performers, with 70 per cent of grade five students – who sat NAPLAN for the first time in 2023 – recording exceptional results this year.
Writing was the northwestern suburb school’s strongest subject with 74 per cent of students achieving above average marks, followed by 70 per cent of pupils scoring above average in numeracy.
Overall, the school saw an improvement in its year-on-year marks, as grade five students jumped 14 points since last year to achieve an average score of 511.7 across the five domains.
Meanwhile, Cranbourne West Secondary College was among four high schools which recorded outstanding results.
Its biggest improvement was recorded in numeracy, with 79 per cent of year 9 students who sat year 7 NAPLAN testing in 2023, achieving above average marks.
Braybrook College, in Melbourne’s west, also saw 59 per cent of its year 9 cohort score above average results across the three domains.
Principal Kelly Panousieris said she was “absolutely chuffed” her school was recognised as one of the most improved.
“A few years back we identified that our students needed assistance to bring their writing up, the NAPLAN had dropped a bit,” she said.
“We introduced some writing into the literacy program, so it was hand-in-hand reading and writing … that’s paid off beautifully.”
Ms Panousieris said she was “incredibly proud” of her “hardworking”, “resilient” and “committed” students.
A total 20 metro schools made the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority’s (ACARA) Schools Making a Difference list, including Ballarat Clarendon College, Serpell Primary, Sunshine Harvester Primary and Glen Waverley Secondary.
A further 21 regional campuses also made the list, selected for having the highest proportions of students making above-average progress in reading, writing and numeracy since their 2023 tests.
The 2025 NAPLAN results for more than 2200 schools will be public on Wednesday, via the My School website.
ACARA chief Stephen Gniel said the website would provide parents and the community with clear and transparent data on the nation’s schools.
“The return of information on student progress … shows how much the same students at the same school have improved since their previous NAPLAN assessments,” he said.
“Student progress data provides the information to celebrate improvement in a fairer way that considers the individual circumstances of a school, as well as to better identify areas for renewed or continued focus.”
Australian Catholic University education expert Professor Steven Lewis said NAPLAN results only provided a “partial picture of the complex work schools and teachers do” so shouldn’t be wholly relied upon when parents choose a school for their child.
“NAPLAN can only ever provide an incomplete picture of students and schools, and so it should only play a partial role when parents and students are choosing schools,” he said.
“I would encourage parents and students to think about what matters most to them when it comes to choosing a school, and this will naturally be different for everyone.”
