A TRAILBLAZING group of Yolngu students have become the first in their community to graduate Year 12 with an ATAR.
Eight students at the Yirrkala Bilingual School in northeast Arnhem Land graduated yesterday, with four achieving an ATAR score.

The students are applying to study courses in 2021 including medicine, teaching and arts.
Aside from their dedication and effort, the school credited the graduates’ success to a bilingual program that uses students’ strengths in their own language, and helps them to access and understand concepts in mainstream curriculum.

Graduate and school dux Kenisha Winunguj, who has applied to study medicine, was proud of their efforts.
“I feel happy to have completed my Year 12 studies and get the opportunity to go to university and study to be a doctor and explore different options for my future,” she said.
