AN ICONIC roadhouse along the Stuart Hwy strip is up for sale. The joint has been open since the 1940s and sees thousands of tourists during the dry season.

Renner Springs Desert Inn is 827km out of Darwin between Elliott and Tennant Creek and is owned by Alan and Christine Revell, who took over in 2008.

The couple put the business on the market for $2 million.

“We’ve been here more than 10 years now, it was really a five year plan so now it’s just time to go,” Mr Revell said.

“I bought a boat about three years ago that’s sitting out the front at the minute but it hasn’t been in the water yet.

“It seems silly to register the boat and trailer when it never gets to the water.”

The roadhouse was originally opened in the 1940s and blossomed into a tourism hotspot.

Mr Revell, who was a lawyer in Brisbane, was attracted to the inn’s unique character.

“I liked the personal nature and the fact it’s fairly isolated,” he said.

“It’s a fairly central service and a warm and friendly place and has a mix of cultures between the cowboys and the countrymen and the travellers and the truckies, who’ve got their own mood.”

“Renner Springs itself is just soaked and steeped in character, there’s no doubt about that.”

About 2000 people pass through Renner Springs each day during the tourist season.

The Inn has a turnover of about $2 million per year but Mr Revell expected it to grown significantly, with the inn recently signing up to become a BP fuel station after being independent for seven years.

He had advice for prospective buyers to continue the Inn’s success.

“It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, as long as you keep doing something at Renner Springs, it’ll all come into place,” he said.
