School leavers aren’t the only ones signing on to four-year apprenticeships. See who else is snapping up the plum jobs.

NT power bosses sacked after Alice Springs blackout

Eleven apprentices from Alice Springs, Katherine and Darwin have joined the Power and Water workforce.

The new recruits include a school leaver, mature-age students and workers looking for a new trade career path.

The recruits spent a week in Darwin taking part in induction workshops and exposing them to diversity of a multi-utility organisation.

Apprentice cable joiner Ashley Idsenga will be based in Darwin and is looking forward to developing new skills in his chosen career path.

“I’m really looking forward to this opportunity, to learn new skills and have a career path,” he said. “I’m genuinely excited about the opportunities ahead.”

Alice Springs-based Huy Tran has taken a job as an apprentice line worker.

“I moved to Alice Springs from Vietnam in 2008 and am a qualified chef,” he said.

“My dream is to be qualified in the electrical field and this apprenticeship was a way to achieve that.”

The new apprentices were welcomed by Power Water chief executive Djuna Pollard.

“I’m really pleased to welcome this new group of apprentices,” she said.

”I’m passionate about the work we do and the services we provide across the Territory and part of that passion includes growing and developing people, providing opportunities and helping them be the best they can be.

“That’s why this program is so important – growing our own workforce and working together to make a difference to the lives of Territorians.”

The four year nationally accredited apprenticeship program will provide the 11 apprentices with the opportunity to learn specialised skills and training in electrical, mechanical and linework.

Power Water General Manager People, Culture and Safety, Ian Jackson said the new apprentices are in for a “great experience”.

“Our apprentices will have diverse opportunities that can provide great career options in the future.”
