Surprising tender released by Power Water Corporation

Power Water Corporation has released a tender covering all its buildings and facilities, but what it wants supplied might surprise you.

Why do your power bills keep going up?

THE Territory’s power distributor has submitted a tender searching for companies to supply its own facilities with electricity.

Power Water Corporation, which owns the wholesale network across the NT, has over 300 facilities which need electricity, according to documents submitted to TendersNT.

“PWC is seeking to establish an Electricity Supply agreement for the provision of electricity to PWC sites,” the tender description read.

“These sites include all eligible PWC sites located within the regulated electricity network across the Territory.”

The contract would run for 12 months from May 1, with the option of a 24-month extension.

Upon questions from the NT News, a spokeswoman for Power Water Corporation said the company was a distributor, not a retailer, and therefore couldn’t supply itself with power.

“Power Water Corporation is an electricity distributor that operates commercially and must purchase electricity from the grid via a licensed electricity retailer for its sites located within the regulated electricity network,” the spokeswoman said.

“All Power and Water sites located within the regulated electricity network are to be tendered – a full list of sites was provided with the Tender documentation,” she said.

“The tender is open to all licensed Northern Territory electricity retailers with the aim of working with retailer(s) to source cost effective rates along with efficient business operations.”

How to pay less for your electricity

The spokeswoman said electricity prices in the Territory had been deregulated since 2010.

According to spreadsheets bundled into the tender, a workshop along the Stuart Highway at Freds Pass, southeast of Palmerston, consumed 3,420 megawatt hours of electricity each year, the most of any site on Power and Water Corporation’s portfolio.
