The Monzaley, a stunning new African-inspired fashion and arts brand with its roots firmly in the Northern Territory, will have its official launch in Darwin on Saturday.
The creation of Kenyan-born Linda Cherop, the Monzaley is about bold, colourful African-inspired designs that capture the eye with dazzling colours and creations that leave a lasting impression but, more importantly, wear well.
With an eye for fashion and a love for creative design going back to her childhood in Kenya, Linda began to realise her dream of creating and stitching her own designs when she moved to Australia.
In 2021 during Covid-19 she began to immerse herself fully in the fashion world, upskilled with a prolific phase of design and creation that became the building blocks for Saturday night’s launch.
Since then she has featured in a number of fashion shows including a star turn at Cairns Fashion Week.
“My designs are mostly very bright, very colourful, with bold colours,” she said.
“They’re African inspired, and then I incorporate other colours to balance it.
“I design outfits that can suit anyone, from mums for families, for young people and kids. It’s everyday wear.
“Living in Darwin where it’s very humid, very summery throughout the year, I tend to make my clothes to capture that and in other states I just work within the different seasons.”
Much of the interest generated in Linda’s output has been word of mouth following a handful of local fashion shows, followed by social media generated interest.
She is hoping to step interest up a notch from Saturday when the Monzaley brand and the website is launched.
Having been on a journey that has seen her travel from Kenya to Australia and eventually Darwin, Linda is keen to share her story with other inspiring designers who want to turn dreams into reality.
She is currently enjoying the balance of mixing a day job with design, and eventually hopes to use her journey to inspire other young creatives to take the leap into fashion.
“One of my goals and dreams is to be able to influence and inspire younger people, younger generations to find out what their dreams are,” Linda said.
“When I came to Darwin after five years in Adelaide I saw the great opportunities that we have in the Northern Territory.
“I got a great welcome when I came here and I thought I would use my designs and my personality to leave my mark on Darwin.”
The Monzaley launch will take place from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday March 15 at the Atrium on the Avenue, 12 Salonika Street, Parap.
