MINDIL Beach has been transformed and is set to be packed with 14,000 people today to see some of the biggest Australian musos take to the stage for BASSINTHEGRASS.

Not even a freshly broken foot could stop Blake Turnell, also known as Chillinit, from flying up to Darwin to take to the stage.

Chillinit fractured his foot in two places and requires surgery, but has put it off in order to play today.

“Yeah we’ll worry about that (the broken foot) later. For now I’ll just enjoy Darwin, enjoy the weather, enjoy the fans and yeah just excited for the show,” he said.

Missy Higgins has travelled from Melbourne for the show and said she was keen to perform in front of a large crowd again.

“Outdoor festivals always have a vibe to them, I think they’re much more laid-back and less formal and people can kind of let loose a bit more … it’s just a little bit more exciting,” she said.

NT Major Events chief executive Tim Watsford said it was the largest BASSINTHEGRASS to ever be held.

He said COVID measures had been put in place as well as plenty of shade and food and water facilities.

“Eight-thousand people are coming from interstate. It is warm, and it’s a different climate … really make sure that you plan ahead,” Mr Watsford said.

He said the team at NT Major Events had worked hard to attract interstate revellers.

“We really wanted to make sure that this event coming out of COVID was really, really strong,” he said.

“People want to get out, people want to dance, people want to mingle, with our advantage in terms of how we responded to COVID.”
