DAN Murphys’ owners are pleased council has supported the liquor merchants’ proposal to move to the Territory, despite initial concerns.

Dan Murphy’s parent company, Endeavour Drinks, general manager corporate services Shane Tremble said he was happy to receive Council’s approval, but eagerly awaited the final decision with the Liquor Commission.

“I’m happy to express my gratitude to Darwin council and I think its another expression of confidence in the brand and we’re grateful of the confidence from them,” he said.

“We will respond promptly to the public submissions and we’ll have those responses in the next few weeks … (for now) we will continue to move through the process with the liquor commission.”

Mr Tremble said Dan Murphy’s would help shape the Eaton precinct as a retail hub, providing an outlet to the northern suburbs.

“It’s a significant retail development they’ve got there and the plans the airport has is going to make it a pretty active precinct, with Bunnings already there,” he said.

“If we are there, we are going to be a big part of it.”

Mr Tremble gave assurance to any aldermen or members of the community who were hesitant about the shop, or had expressed concerns over a collective alcohol problem in the Territory.

“We’re confident the practices in place will ensure there is no negative impact on the community as a result of the store,” he said.

“(Endeavour drinks) have got a flawless record of operation in the Northern Territory over four decades, we have a track record of working with local council and governments to ensure.”

Council gave their support for Dan Murphy’s on Tuesday night, provided all risk management strategies outlined in a community impact analysis, presented to them in confidence, were adopted.

Council initially withheld support until they had seen more information on community impact and the store’s operation.
