COUNCIL has given its support to a new Dan Murphy’s in Darwin provided a series of conditions are followed in its implementation.

Council staff previously found no grounds for objection in Dan Murphy’s application but the elected members wanted more information before supporting the new store.

Its support of the super store is conditional on “the adoption of all of the risk management strategies and measures detailed in the (confidential) Public and Community Impact Analysis” which has been submitted as a part of the application process.

Deputy Mayor Gary Haslett said council “overall would not oppose it”, but still had concerns about the liquor giant.

He said seeing further information had given Council more trust in a responsible implementation of the business.

“I would not have voted to ‘support’ (it) ... but I can’t see any grounds to object either,” he said.

“I can see they’re going to make a reasonable effort to not bring rivers of grog into Darwin.”

Alderman Simon Niblock moved to say he had “dissent” over the motion.

“As a city, collectively, we have an alcohol problem ... I see no need for such a large establishment built in the city of Darwin.”
