DARWIN council has voted against a motion which would have seen a deadline on development proposals at the Darwin Cenotaph carpark after fears the deadline would prevent any future developments on the site.

The motion which would have put a “sunset clause on any proposals” to be returned to council by September 22, led council to believe it could prevent any development, including converting it into green space beyond the date.
Alderman Jimmy Bouhoris asked council if the motion could be restricted to the RSL rather than any development but council procedures denied the request.

The motion had originally been intended to quash community angst about a proposal by the RSL to build a new club house on the Esplanade, despite no plans being formally submitted. RSL president Steve Gloster previously said the deadline was reasonable.
