Black Rabbit Espresso’s Peter Coulam says he won’t forget Anzac Day car park baby delivery

After eight years in his coffee van, well-known Red Hill barista Peter Coulam thought he’d seen it all until a couple drove up needing an urgent delivery.

Commander-in-Chief of the Black Rabbit Espresso Peter Coulamsays he’s had an Anzac Day he won’t forget with a baby born metres away from where he creates his daily South American inspired brew.

Coulam (illustrated) was readying for the Anzac Day rush at 6.30am when a car drove into the car park on Musgrave Rd at Red Hill where the Black Rabbit van has been a feature for locals and the corporate crowd heading into the CBD for almost eight years.

“They pulled up and didn’t get out and I could see the man moving about inside from the driver’s seat to the back of the car and then to the other side,” he says.

“I thought he was getting his order sorted.”

It all became clearer when the first ambulance arrived.

“That’s when I knew something wasn’t right and then I could see the wife in the front seat and she was going through labour,” Coulam says.

“I was pretty happy the ambos were there and I wasn’t there helping to deliver the child.”

Coulam doesn’t know if the couple was there for a coffee fix before going to the hospital or if they had to make an emergency stop and call the ambulance – and he wonders what became of them.

But he says the father appeared very calm during the ordeal.

“He didn’t seem flustered at all and he gave me the thumbs and a wave up before getting into the ambulance with his wife after the baby was born in the front seat,” he says.

“It’s the first time anything like this has happened here and it would be great to know if they had a boy or a girl. If they come in, the coffee is on me.”
