A police raid of a Brazilian politician’s home over alleged misappropriated public funds found he had cash hidden in his underwear including notes clenched between his butt cheeks.

Chico Rodrigues, a deputy to President Jair Bolsonaro and a federal senator, was caught on Wednesday as police searched his home. Officers raided Mr Rodrigues’ house as part of a larger operation into suspected misappropriation of public money intended for tackling COVID-19.

Police found 10,000 reais ($A2516), along with $US6000 ($A8400) in a safe in Mr Rodrigues’ home according to a report from the AFR, at which point the politician asked if he could use the bathroom. Police then noticed a rectangular bulge in the rear of his pants.

Police then found stacks of money worth up to 15,000 reais ($A3774) near his buttocks. Mr Rodrigues was then asked three more times if he was concealing cash, at which point he retrieved another stack of bills worth 17,900 reais ($A4503). A subsequent search turned up another 250 reais ($62) inside the senator’s underpants.

A report in Revista Crusoe claimed officers found money “hidden under the senator’s clothes”, and had discovered some cash hidden in Mr Rodrigues’ underpants. The report added “some of the recovered notes were stained with faeces”.

In Brazil, the news quickly went viral and was shared under the hashtag #PropinaNaBunda, which translates to “bribery in the a***”.

The senator defended himself in a statement, saying: “My home was invaded for having done my job as a lawmaker, getting resources for the state to combat COVID-19.

“I believe in justice and I will prove that I have nothing to do with any illicit act.”

Mr Rodrigues was later suspended from the senate for 90 days over the incident, and stepped down from his position representing the President on Thursday.

Mr Rodrigues said in an earlier statement his political rivals may have been involved in a smear campaign.

“I have a clean background and a respectable life,” he said. “I’ve never been involved in any kind of scandal.”

Mr Bolsonaro said on Wednesday he didn’t think any kind of corruption was present within his government.

The President said in comments on Wednesday he’d deliver a kick to the neck of anyone found guilty of corruption in his government.
