‘Weirdest’ group of Trump fans emerges ahead of election

Crowds of Japanese Trump supporters have flown to the US to show their support at the President’s rallies ahead of the election.

With the US elections less than three weeks away, an increasing number of US citizens are turning out to show their support for the Democrat or Republican candidate.

But an unusual group has emerged as vocal supporters of US President Donald Trump during one of his election rallies in Pennsylvania.

A noisy group of supporters from Japan, who flew to the US to show support for Mr Trump, have been garnering attention as unexpected fans of the President. The group has been seen carrying banners saying, “Japan stands with Trump” and “Trump Landslide”.

They were also captured on video chanting, “Landslide victory! Landslide victory!”

“One of the weirdest things I’ve seen at a Trump rally – supporters from Japan who’ve flown over to Pennsylvania to attend,” 9News journalist Tim Arvier wrote in a tweet.

On Tuesday night, Mr Trump held a presidential rally in Pennsylvania, the home state of his opponent Joe Biden, before he visits Iowa, North Carolina, Florida and Georgia this week.

The President is campaigning to turn his recent coronavirus diagnosis into a positive, after testing negative from the virus on Monday.

Mr Trump is trailing Mr Biden by double digits in national polls, but Iowa and Georgia were two states which Trump won in 2016. Current polls show tight races in both states ahead of the November 3 election.

Florida and its 29 votes in the Electoral College went to Mr Trump in the last election. Americans over the age of 65 favoured Mr Trump over Hillary Clinton by a margin of 53 per cent to 45 per cent, according to the Pew Research Centre and exit polls.

But the latest polls show a dramatic shift away from Mr Trump among seniors this time around, driven in large part by his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic which has taken a disproportionate toll among the elderly.

A recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll had Mr Biden leading Mr Trump among seniors by 27 points – 62 per cent to 35 per cent – while a CNN/SSRS poll had him up by 21 points among Americans 65 and older – 60 per cent to 39 per cent.

Mr Biden slammed the President’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic as he visited the battleground state of Florida on Tuesday to court elderly American voters, who went for the Republican in 2016 but appear to be swinging to the Democrats this time around.

“The only senior that Donald Trump cares about is the senior Donald Trump,” Mr Biden, 77, told a small gathering at a retirement community centre in Pembroke Pines, north of Miami.

“He’s never been focused on you,” Mr Biden said.

“This President cares more about the stock market than he does about the wellbeing of seniors.”

“His handling of this pandemic has been erratic, just like his presidency has been,” he said.
