Proud Boys: Inside the far-right group that backs Trump

The far-right group who previously aligned themselves with the former US President have turned their backs on Donald Trump, calling him a “shill”.

The Proud Boys, who vowed to disrupt the inauguration of President Joe Biden by posing as his supporters, have now turned on Mr Trump. The group expressed dismay at the former President’s inability to overturn the election, according to a report from The New York Times.

They’ve also told all their members to abandon their supporting him and stop attending his rallies, saying he is doomed to be remembered as a “failure”.

But a failure to launch appears to have soured the group’s enthusiasm for Mr Trump, with members dismissing the former President’s legacy.

“Trump will go down as a total failure,” one member of the Proud Boys said in a chat on Telegram.

The group also referred to Mr Trump as a “shill” and called him “extraordinarily weak”.

It’s an extraordinary turnaround for the militia group who’d fancied itself a paramilitary force who’d assist the former president in a “revolt” to overturn the November election.

After Mr Biden was declared the winner, the group had planned violence throughout the US, telling their members they planned to “take over” Washington D.C. during Mr Biden’s inauguration.

“Revolt motherf**kers,” the group’s leader, Enrique Tarrio said last month. “Do whatever you got to do to f***ing get your tickets.

“You show up there in Biden gear and you turn his inauguration into a f***ing circus, a sign of resistance, a sign of revolution.”

Last year during the first presidential debate between Mr Trump and now President Biden, moderator Chris Wallace asked Mr Trump to “condemn white supremacists and militia groups”.

Mr Trump responded, saying “almost everything I see is from the left wing”.

He continued: “Proud boys, stand back and stand by.

“But I’ll tell you what, somebody has got to do something about Antifa and the left, because this is not a right wing problem. This is a left wing problem.”

The group celebrated after Mr Trump made the comments, and one large social media account associated with the Proud Boys changed its logo to include the phrase “Stand back. Stand by.”

A Telegram account run by the Proud Boys posted an update following the debate with the update: “Standing down and standing by sir”.

The Proud Boys posted on Telegram last week they welcomed the Biden administration.

“At least the incoming administration is honest about their intentions,” the update said.
