Hillary Clinton suggests Donald Trump incited Capitol riot on Putin’s behalf
Donald Trump was probably “on the phone with Putin” during the deadly Capitol riots, Hillary Clinton has sensationally claimed.
Hillary Clinton has made a sensational claim about her former rival, Donald Trump, on his last day as US President, suggesting the 74-year-old incited the deadly January 6 storming of the US Capitol on behalf of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Ms Clinton, who lost to the outgoing President in the 2016 election, floated the theory to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the latest episode of her podcast, You And Me Both, suggesting Mr Trump was likely “talking to” the Russian leader on the day of the violent siege and she’d “love to see” his phone records.
“We learned a lot about our system of government over the last four years with a president who disdains democracy and, as you have said numerous times, has other agendas,” the former secretary of state and first lady said.
“What they all are, I don’t think we yet know. I hope historically we will find out who he’s beholden to, who pulls his strings. I would love to see his phone records to see whether he was talking to Putin the day that the insurgents invaded our Capitol.
“But we now know that not just him, but his enablers, his accomplices, his cult members, have the same disregard for democracy.”

Congress needs to establish an investigative body like the 9/11 Commission to determine Trump's ties to Putin so we can repair the damage to our national security and prevent a puppet from occupying the presidency ever again. pic.twitter.com/yR7LQmXm5Z
What weâre seeing right now is a president with nothing left to lose and only one goalâto distract people from the fact that he lost.

He doesnât care that the costs are Americaâs health, security, and our very democracy.
Asked whether she believes a 9/11-style commission should be established to investigate what led to the riot, Ms Pelosi said there is “strong support in the Congress to do that”, piggybacking off Ms Clinton’s claims about the ties between the two men.
“I don’t know what Putin has on him politically, financially or personally, but what happened last week was a gift to Putin, because Putin wants to undermine democracy in our country and throughout the world,” Ms Pelosi said.
“And these people, unbeknownst to them, maybe, are Putin puppets. They were doing Putin’s business when they did that at the incitement of an insurrection by the President of the United States.”
She added that with “Mr President, all roads lead to Putin”.

While many view Mr Trump’s own inflammatory words and behaviour are to blame for the “attack on democracy” that left five people dead – he’s even been impeached a second time as a result – it’s worth pointing out that Ms Clinton’s theory is completely baseless at this point.
“There was a House investigation. A Senate investigation. A special prosecutor investigation with the full powers of law enforcement. Obsessive media inquiries. None found what Hillary Clinton wanted to find. So she wants another,” conservative commentator Byron York wrote on Twitter, linking to the podcast episode.
The Mueller report – a probe into Russian efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election, as well as allegations of conspiracy or co-ordination between the Trump campaign and Russia and allegations of obstruction of justice – was released in 2019.
It concluded that while it did not “exonerate” Mr Trump, there was insufficient evidence to suggest he had “committed a crime” or that his campaign “co-ordinated with the Russian government in its election-interference activities”.

In the aftermath of the Capitol breach, Ms Clinton backed the calls to impeach Mr Trump, writing in a piece for The Washington Post: “He gave white supremacists, members of the extreme right and conspiracy theorists their most powerful platforms yet.
“By the time he lost in 2020, he had whipped a dangerous element of our country into a frenzy. His supporters began planning their insurrection, making plans to march on the Capitol and ‘stop the steal’,” she wrote.
“Trump left no doubt about his wishes, in the lead-up to January 6 and with his incendiary words before his mob descended.
“Removing Trump from office is essential, and I believe he should be impeached. Members of Congress who joined him in subverting our democracy should resign, and those who conspired with the domestic terrorists should be expelled immediately.”
