Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law compares Kamala Harris to a designer ‘trash bag’

Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara, who is now a top official in his party, has come up with a colourful way to describe Kamala Harris.

Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, has compared his election opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, to a designer “trash bag” in America’s latest example of classy, temperate political rhetoric.

Still. Designer. Could be worse, right?

Ms Trump, who is married to the former president’s son Eric, was made a co-chair of the Republican National Committee in March. She said her “number one goal” in the job was to get her father-in-law elected president again.

Speaking to Fox News on Monday night, US time, Ms Trump suggested Ms Harris was the political equivalent of an overpriced shopping item.

“It reminds me of – there was a bag that a very famous designer designed. This was several years ago,” Ms Trump said.

“And it, literally, was a trash bag. But they sold this thing for like $US2000, thinking that people will actually buy it.

“It’s a similar situation with Kamala Harris. Nobody was interested in Kamala Harris even several months ago.”

Host Sean Hannity chipped in, saying Ms Harris had “by far the most radical record of anybody that has ever run for the office of the presidency”.

“I would argue, in 98 days, it is the job of the Republican Party and the Trump campaign to make sure every American knows this record, backwards and forwards,” he said.

“Sean, you’re exactly right,” Ms Trump said.

“Because look, I think we very clearly have seen the mainstream media, and the folks out there are not going to do it for us.

“In fact, they’re trying to rewrite history. It’s been incredible to see the way they have tried to prop up Kamala Harris and really sell her as some sort of amazing political figure.

“She was rated the most liberal, most radical member of the United States Senate. We have to speak that loudly and clearly to the American people.”

In the US, “liberal” means left-wing. Since she became the Democratic candidate, Ms Harris has set about walking back some of the more progressive policy positions she espoused when unsuccessfully seeking her party’s nomination in 2020.

‘Nothing prepares you’

Ms Trump was among several members of Mr Trump’s family who spoke at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee earlier this month.

In her speech, Mr Trump’s daughter-in-law opened up about the attempt on his life. The assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania injured Mr Trump’s ear. A member of the crowd was killed.

“Our family has faced our fair share of death threats,” said Ms Trump.

“None of that prepares you, as a daughter-in-law, to watch in real time someone try to kill a person you love.

“None of that prepares you, as a mother, to quickly reach for the remote and turn your young children away from the screen so that they’re not witness to something that scars the memory of their grandpa for the rest of their lives.”

At one point, she addressed Mr Trump directly. The former president was sitting in the crowd at the time.

“Thank you for your resilience. Thank you for continuing on. Thank you for raising wonderful kids. Thank you for being an amazing grandfather,” Ms Trump said.

“Thank you for never giving up on me, and thank you for never giving up on our country.”

In his own speech Ms Trump’s husband Eric, who is an executive vice president at his father’s company, the Trump Organisation, said his father had been “persecuted” by “far-left Democrats, special interest groups and handpicked judges”.

“I’m honoured to be your son,” Eric told his father.

“You are a true leader. You epitomise strength. Our country loves you, our country appreciates you, our country misses you, and on November 5, our country will re-elect you.”
