Michelle Obama explains why she didn’t run for US presidency
She could easily become America’s first female president if she ran for the White House, but Michelle Obama doesn’t want the nation’s top job. This is why.
America’s former first lady Michelle Obama said she hasn’t run for the US presidency because her path “has never been politics.”
The confession came during a surprise visit to the Lower Eastside Girls Club in New York City on Saturday as part of her Becoming book tour, the New York Post reports.
A beaming Mrs Obama was greeted by delighted squeals from 30 girls before the group struck up a conversation.
“You can ask anything! I am ready,” Mrs Obama told the kids.
“How come you didn’t run for president?” one of them said.
Obama cited several reasons, including giving her two daughters a break from a heavy security presence.
She went on to say with a laugh, “I don’t wanna be president! … My path has never been politics. I just happened to marry somebody whose passion was politics. Just because he likes it doesn’t mean that I like it!”
At more than two million copies sold, Mrs Obama’s Becoming was recently named the year’s best-selling hardcover book.
Speaking at a second event the same day at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, where thousands came to see her speak, Mrs Obama discussed the difficulty of having equality in one’s marriage and work at the same time.
“Nope, not at the same time,” she said.
“That’s a lie. And it’s not always enough to lean in, because that s*** doesn’t work all the time.”
