An Australian executive has been arrested in France amid an investigation into the suspected attempted murder of his wife in their home last week.

Damien Carew, 43, and Anna Polianskaya Carew, 33, were living in a rented villa in La Turbie, north of Monaco, on the French Riviera prior to an incident on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old, understood to be from Melbourne, was reported to have been the one to call emergency services regarding the welfare of his wife.

She lost consciousness and remains in a coma, while he has been detained and remains in custody.

Their two children are in the care of their mum’s family, local news website NEWS.MC reported.

The mum had been working for a well-known family office in Monaco and for multiple real estate companies in the area, with her LinkedIn profile stating she had worked as a brand manager at Stardust boutique in Hotel de Paris.

The news site reported the Australian man had recently been released from several months in prison and was bound by “judicial controls” regarding his alleged connection to a money-laundering case.

The family’s villa was reported to be partly concealed behind a thick hedge at the end of a cul-de-sac, according to local media outlets.

Those living near the house said they heard nothing out of the ordinary coming from the villa on the day of the alleged incident.

Police had however attended the home and sealed it off with police tape, they said.

A judicial investigation into attempted aggravated murder and intentional violence against a spouse had reportedly since been opened by prosecutors.

News site Monaco-Matin reported the man had a Parisian legal representative when he appeared before a judge ordered he be detained.

The same site reported his company was also placed into compulsory liquidation.
