Covid NSW: Half of residents in Sydney suburb, Edmondson Park infected with Covid

The tiny Sydney suburb is only home to a population to 2271 but one in two residents have been infected with Covid during the pandemic as cases soar in NSW.

More people are reporting COVID-19 reinfection

The small Sydney suburb of Edmondson Park has recorded the highest rates of positive Covid cases per capita across the pandemic, with more than 56 cases recorded per 100 people.

Data shared by the Sydney Morning Herald, via software developer Ethan combined data from NSW Health and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

According to the 2016 census, the southwest suburb is home to 2271 people.

The neighbouring suburb of Leppington and the northwestern Sydney suburb of Schofields and Box Hill reported the next highest case rates with more than 35 infections per 100 people. Census figures state these suburbs recorded a population of 3498, 4983 and 902 respectively.

Despite this, it is important to note that the population figures observed in the 2016 census are likely outdated, which skews the per capita figure listed.

“Edmondson Park is an area with a significant number of new dwellings, suggesting the 2020 population estimate is likely an underestimate,” the article states.

“Other suburbs with high case rates – including Schofields and Box Hill – should probably be viewed with the same caution.”

This comes as infections are rising across the state, as the more infectious BA. 2 Omicron subvariant continues to become the dominant strain.

On Monday, NSW Health reported 15,572 positive tests, with 9981 confirmed via Rapid Antigen Tests and 5591 from PCR tests.

According to Covid Live, the state currently has 266,110 active cases, with 1418 cases in hospital. Of those figures, 56 patients are currently in ICU and with 18 requiring ventilators.

Tragically, the state death department also recorded 17 new deaths across Monday and Sunday. This included the death of a person in their 30s who had received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine and didn’t have any underlying health concerns.

Despite the increasing daily infections, one of Australia’s top doctors, Professor Nick Coatsworth said the Australian government should stop counting daily case numbers soon.

“This needs to move beyond cases now,” he said during an appearance on 3AW on Friday.

“There needs to come a time when we need to stop counting the cases. That’ll probably be when the Omicron curve comes well and truly down.”

From Monday, select groups will also be able to access a second booster shot four months after their third vaccine dose.

This includes people over 65, immunocompromised people, those in aged care, and indigenous Australians aged over 50.
