The Chinese tourist in the Maldives had a close brush with death after the predator tried to take a bite on the island of Hulhumale, by the capital Male.
During a heart-pounding video, the shark sneaks up behind the diver, grabs him by the head and shakes him around at a dive site in the holiday hotspot.
Miraculously the diver managed to escape with their life, though suffering a serious wound.
The shark appeared to give up on this attempt as it swam away.
This terrifying video ends as the near-victim waved their hands and desperately swam away.
The diver was reportedly taken to hospital and required multiple stitches following the attack.
The group of visitors reportedly did not encounter this shark at one of the local dive centres.
They are thought to have used a speedboat to reach the island and reportedly used bait to attract sharks, which is illegal in the Maldives.
This location has become a popular spot for shark diving experiences and excursions.
Shark attacks are rare in the Maldives but several cases of terrifying attacks have been documented.
Another tourist was left with gruesome injuries after he was reportedly mauled as he swam at the country’s Noonu Atoll, The Sun previously reported in April.
Doctors battled to save the man’s leg after the shark “almost bit it off”.
The victim was a guest at a £700-a-night ($A13000) luxury resort on the tropical paradise.
Terrifying images showed the extent of the holidaymaker’s injuries in hospital.
Telegram channel 112 said that the man was “happily splashing in the azure ocean near Noonu Atoll”.
“The man was seriously injured and required surgery ahead of a long period of recovery.”
Russian diplomat German Fyodorov said the embassy covering the Maldives – based in Sri Lanka – was unaware of any incident involving one of its citizens and a shark at the time.
Another terrifying video exposed another shark attack on a diving group in the Maldives.
The predator beelined for one diver before moving onto the next, smashing into each with its powerful head and snout.
